How things stand in the Anglo-Welsh Cup

Posted on January 25 2017

Going into this weekend’s third round fixture with Leicester Tigers, Saints carry an unbeaten record after having collected wins over Gloucester Rugby and Newcastle Falcons in the opening rounds of this season’s Anglo-Welsh Cup campaign.

The opening round of the competition saw Saints travel north to face the Falcons. The young guns opened their campaign with a statement of intent and impressive tries from Tom Collins and Rory Hutchinson got them off to a winning start, the final score 24-16 in the Saints’ favour.

The following weekend Saints returned to Franklin’s Gardens to host Gloucester. In a tighter affair, the new heroes of black, green and gold held out a late comeback from their guests to take a 19-13 win, despite Gloucester coming back from a 19-3 deficit.

Saints now sit top of Pool 1, above Saracens, Newport Gwent Dragons and Bath Rugby, with two round of the the pool stages left to play.

This weekend Leicester Tigers are the opposition, the local rivals also sitting at the top of their pool after winning their opening rounds. Tigers beat Bath on the road by just one point in the campaign opener before sealing a convincing 42-3 home win over Newport in the last round.

With both sides looking to continue their unbeaten run, this Saturday’s test at Welford Road will prove crucial to both teams as they push for a place in the knock-out stages.
