Weekend wins for Six Nations Saints

Posted on February 13 2017

All six Saints in international action over the weekend tasted victory in the Six Nations as England took a stranglehold on the tournament at both Under-18 and senior level.

Saints Academy half-backs Alex Mitchell and James Grayson got the ball rolling on Friday night as the Under-20s picked up a second bonus point win from two, the latter kicking six points on debut in an impressive 37-21 result.

Their senior charges were then led by Dylan Hartley to a record setting 16th straight victory on Saturday evening, the Red Rose prevailing late on in Cardiff against a Wales side devoid of George North. While the wing was a late withdrawal at Principality Stadium with a dead leg, club mate Courtney Lawes impressed for the visitors, racking up 15 tackles and 7 gain line breaks in a huge all-round performance. Saints skipper Tom Wood, meanwhile, also featured in the epic 21-16 win as a 'finisher'.

That pair of scorelines saw both England sides go clear at the top of their respective tables, the Under-20s now two points clear courtesy of their try bonuses and the seniors the only remaining undefeated side after a Sunday defeat for Scotland - Louis Picamoles again featuring for France in that Paris clash. The big number 8 leads the tournament in metres made, defenders beaten and offloads after two rounds of action.
